Love, Lies, and Hollywood

The seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo

Love, Lies, and Hollywood

It is a known fact that I am a huge fan of reading, but as of late I have been in a slump. I was not feeling any of the recent books I had picked up until The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid.

I first heard of the book through TikTok, which made me a little skeptical because I had been disappointed by recommendations from the app in the past. But when a friend offered me her annotated copy of the book; I decided to give it a try.

Overall the book was a good read. It was beautifully written, it was an easy story to follow, and it took me about a day to finish. It had me hooked from the first few chapters and instantly had me wondering the big question of the book; who was the love of Evelyn Hugo’s life?

The story follows journalist Monique Grant as she sets out to interview Evelyn Hugo, Hollywood superstar. Evelyn talks about her rise to stardom, the struggles she faced having to hide the fact that she was a Cuban and bisexual woman, and, the ins and outs of her seven marriages.

The story is told through the perspective of Evelyn and how she recalls past events during the interview. We learn the lies, the deception, and the heartbreaks of the famous actress as well as the secret relationship she had with a woman.

Though she lived a life in the public eye, Evelyn Hugo held many secrets. I cannot think of a better way to have spent my weekend than uncovering the truth of this fictional world.
